AIIA Building on Schedule

AIIA’s new home is growing at speedy pace. Not only are the steel beams in place, you can actually see the general structure of the building. Along the far side, a wall is up; and along the top, we have cover. The curbs along the parking lot edges have been placed. We hope you share in the excitement because this building is for you, our Big “I” members.

ON THE HILL: Do Not Fax Rule Delayed
Agents and brokers worried about the impact of the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) Do Not Fax Rule now have a reprieve until July 1, 2005. The initial proposed implementation date of Aug. 25, 2003, was extended by the FCC when it granted a stay of the rule until Jan. 1, 2005, after the Big “I” and other groups petitioned the FCC to reconsider it. Now the FCC has announced that it will continue the stay on the Do Not Fax rule again, delaying the implementation date to July 1, 2005. The FCC published a Do Not Call (DNC) rule on July 25, 2003, amending its rules implementing the Telephone Consumer Protection Act of 1991. The DNC rule has a potentially significant impact on insurance agency and brokerage firms as well as trade associations. The rule addresses two broad categories of activities: telemarketing and fax solicitations. In short, the fax solicitations rule requires that before anyone can send any fax that contains an unsolicited commercial advertisement, the business must get prior written consent from the recipient. The Big “I” continues to work toward passage of pending legislation to clarify and simplify the fax rule so it does not impede or interfere with faxing clients and prospects. The association and its coalition partners will continue to lobby the U.S. Senate to pass S. 2603 during the lame duck session of Congress and, if need be, when Congress reconvenes in January for the start of the 109th session. For more information on the Do Not Call and Do Not Fax rules, go to the legal advocacy section of the Big “I” Web site and click on the FAQ section.
